F 1 Visas - Foreign Students

Persons coming to pursue academic study on a full-time basis

Employment of F-1 Students.

1.Based on economic hardship:

May be authorized by USCIS because of unforeseen loss of financial support;

Must show severe economic hardship caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond student's control;

Must have completed one full academic year;

Must be in good academic standing.

Hours - 20 hours per week during school and full-time during recess and vacations.

2. PRACTICAL TRAINING - Employment during academic program or after completion of degree for the purpose of giving student additional experience in his/her field of study - not to be used by U.S. employer to train foreign national for permanent position in the U.S.

a. Curricular Practical Training.

Can be part of work/study course; where internship or practicum is a mandatory course requirement.

b. Optional Practical Training

Can be used before or after graduation;

Limited to one year after each level of academic achievement; 

Student must have completed 9 months as an F-1 student;

Part-time work during school year; full-time for vacations and recesses;

Full-time employment authorized after completion of degree.

Authorized by Student Advisor or Designated School Official (DSO) who endorses students' I-20 - Certificate of Eligibility for Student Visa. Must obtain Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS before starting work.
